Everything is bigger in Texas, including the opportunities for truck drivers. From the Permian Basin oil fields to the Dallas logistics hubs, the demand for CDL drivers is at an all-time high.

However, dealing with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) can be confusing. This guide simplifies the process, explains the fees, and provides a practice test to help you pass.

3. Get Your CLP

After passing the written tests, you receive your Commercial Learner's Permit.

4. Wait 14 Days (Mandatory)

Texas law requires you to hold your CLP for at least 14 days before you can take the road skills test. Use this time for ELDT training.

5. Pass Skills Test

Schedule an appointment. You will perform the Pre-Trip Inspection, Basic Control Skills, and Road Driving.

Is the Texas Test Different?

No. Although you are applying through the Texas DPS, the questions come from the federal FMCSA pool.

This means if you study with our national CDL Pass Master app, you are 100% covered for the Texas exam. The laws of air brakes and physics don't change at the state line!
