HazMat Study Guide: What You Must Know
The HazMat test is the hardest CDL written exam because it requires precise knowledge of codes. Focus on these topics:
1. The "Placarding Tables" Trap
This is where 50% of students fail. You must know the difference between Table 1 and Table 2.
Table 1 (Any Amount)
Placard if you carry ANY amount. No exceptions.
- 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 Explosives
- 2.3 Poison Gas
- 4.3 Dangerous When Wet
- 7 Radioactive (Yellow III)
Table 2 (1,001 lbs Rule)
Placard only if > 1,001 lbs.
- 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 Explosives
- 2.1 Flammable Gas
- 3 Flammable Liquid (Gasoline)
- 8 Corrosives (Batteries)
2. Shipping Papers (ISHP Rule)
Remember ISHP: Item description, Shipping name, Hazard class, Packing group. Shipping papers must be within reach of the driver at all times.
3. Emergency Response
If there is a leak or spill, keep the shipping papers and the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) accessible to first responders. You must know the proper evacuation distance for your material class.
