Illinois CDL Practice Test & 2026 Study Guide (IL SOS)
Don't just read the guide. Test yourself with the actual questions likely to appear on your CDL test.
Illinois is one of the busiest trucking hubs in America. Whether you are driving locally in Chicago or hauling freight across I-55, getting your CDL from the Illinois Secretary of State (SOS) is a smart career move.
But the process can be confusing. Unlike other states that use the DMV, Illinois uses "SOS Facilities". This guide breaks down the fees, location tips, and the tests you need to pass.
Illinois CDL Fees (2026)
Before you start, make sure you bring the correct payment method. The IL SOS accepts check, cash, and major credit cards.
| Service | Fee | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| CLP (Learner's Permit) | $50.00 | 180 Days |
| Initial CDL License | $60.00 | 4 Years |
| Renewal | $60.00 | 4 Years |
| Add Endorsement | $5.00 | Per endorsement |
📍 Where to Take the Test? (Major SOS Facilities)
Not all SOS facilities offer CDL services. Here are the main hubs in the Chicago area and downstate:
- West Chicago: 1280 Powis Rd (Very busy, go early).
- Elk Grove Village: 650 Roppolo Dr.
- South Holland: 41 W 162nd St.
- Springfield (Downstate): 2701 S. Dirksen Pkwy.

📝 The "Medical Card" Rule (MEC)
In Illinois, you CANNOT get your CLP until your medical status is updated in the system.
Don't wait in line! You can email your Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC) to the SOS beforehand. This saves you a wasted trip if their system hasn't updated yet.
